Newport Chest on Chest Four Shell

This chest-on-chest is one of a suite of available block-front shell carved Newport furniture including: Newport Six Shell Secretary Desk, Newport Block and Shell Carved Slant Top Desk, Newport Block and Shell Bureau or Chest-of-Drawers. Magnificent bonnet top of a broken arched piedmont is supported by carved quarter columns. The center plinth supports one of the three flame finials. Dramatic and bold convex and concave shell carvings are superbly executed. The carved shells complement the top drawers of both upper cabinet and lower block front chest. Accented with scrolled solid-brass hardware and balanced to proportion on bracket feet with scrolled knee blocks. A museum quality masterpiece of early American Chippendale furniture.
