Newport Card Table
|
The Newport Card Table is an excellent example of the extraordinary craftsmanship of 18th century cabinetmakers Goddard and Townsend. Our hand crafted reproduction of the Newport Card Table shows the same meticulous attention to detail, with the intaglio carved knees and open-taloned claw and ball feet. By the mid-18th Century, entertaining guests was an integral part of social life. The primary choice of entertainment was card playing. Card tables were indispensable articles of furniture. It was not uncommon to see six to twelve of a kind displayed in a wealthy household. A distinctive feature of the early card tables is the top which folds into two equal parts. When the table was not in use it could stand against a wall, only taking up half of the space and protecting the elegant top as well. This table has 2 swinging back legs that pivot from a central block.
