Philadelphia Scalloped Top Tea Table

One of the centerpieces of eighteenth century sociability was the tripod Pie Crust Tea Table. Afternoon tea consumption was a time for things as simple as an informal gathering of friends to the more influential meetings of community leaders. The grace and elegance of this table made it an important reflection on the status of the host. Only the finest elements for serving tea would do. Carved Tea Tables with their rotating tops, were ideal for the hostess to pour tea, then rotate the Tea Table top to serve the guests. When the afternoon tea was finished the pie crust tea table could be tilted upright for storage and display.

This rare form scalloped top tea table has an eight-segment scalloped top and is often referred to as a Pie Crust Tea Table, claw and ball table, pillar-and-claw table or tripod candle stand. The top rests on an open style bird cage which allows the pie crust table top to turn or tilt vertically. A fluted carved pillar leads to a compressed ball which is unique to Philadelphia style tea tables. An ornate rhythmic flow of the shell-and-leaf carving is evident on the knee and foot of the cabriolet legs.

This elegant table can be used as a serving table, card table, dining table, display table, candle stand and can be placed in its vertical position to display the beautiful rococo style carving. The Philadelphia Scalloped Top Tea Table makes an excellent display for any of our Tea Caddies.
