Tall
Case Clock ~ Hepplewhite Simon Willard |
During the first half of the 19th century the Willard family dominated clock making in the Boston area, with Simon Willard being referred to as the dean of American clock makers. The Tall Case Clock was an elegant example of Willard's craft. The Tall Case design was developed following the introduction of the pendulum, to protect the moving mechanisms from dust and damage.
When purchasing a clock from Simon Willard, his clientèle were provided written instructions for running the clock, a guarantee, a public statement of ownership on the dial, and personalized service. He further recommended that his workman stay overnight when the clock was delivered to ensure that all was in working order.
