Block-front and shell carved slant-top desks are very representative of similar
Chippendale Newport masterpieces documented to John Goddard and John Townsend craftsmen. Both convex and
concave carved shells are superbly represented with the blocking that is extended on the lid of the slant
front desk. Refinement of craftsmanship is evident by the raised beading around the block-front drawers.
Superb interior detailing with shells and an amphitheater of drawers and arched pigeonholes. Blocking on
the front is complemented by bold, solid brass hardware. Carved volutes accent the end beading of the ogee
bracket feet. All elements combined are kept in balance and proportion with the refinement of craftsmanship
deserving of this masterpiece.
This chest-on-chest is one of a suite of available shell carved block-front Newport
furniture including: Newport Six Shell Secretary
Desk, Newport four Shell Chest-on-chest,
Newport Block and Shell Bureau
or Chest-of-Drawers.
